Overview
The government defines a digital nomad as a national of a country outside the EU and EEA who is employed by, or works under a civil-law contract for, a business based outside Slovenia, or who is self-employed abroad, doing all the work remotely through information and communication technology. Digital nomads do not enter the Slovenian labour market, so the labour-market admission rules do not apply to them.
Applications are filed at a Slovenian embassy or consular post abroad. Foreigners who already live legally in Slovenia can file at any administrative unit in the country.
Editor's note โ The permit lasts up to one year and cannot be extended: to stay on, you must wait six months after it expires and apply again. Plan a Slovenian year, not a Slovenian base.
Who is eligible
- National of a country outside the EU and EEA.
- Employed by, or working under a civil-law contract for, a business based outside Slovenia โ or self-employed abroad.
- All work done remotely through information and communication technology, without entering the Slovenian labour market.
- Monthly means of at least twice the average monthly net salary in Slovenia.
Income & financial requirements
The average monthly net salary in Slovenia.
Derived from the latest average gross salary published there.
Maximum, with no extension.
Before a new application.
The means-of-subsistence test is twice the average monthly net salary in Slovenia, calculated from the average monthly gross salary most recently published in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia. Because the reference figure changes during the year, the government does not publish a fixed euro amount โ ask the embassy for the figure that applies on the day you file.
Costs & fees
- Administrative fees for the permit application and the residence card (ask the embassy for the current amounts).
- Health insurance for the stay.
- Translations, and legalisation or apostilles of foreign documents.
Taxes
The government's announcement does not describe a tax incentive for digital nomads. Whether Slovenia taxes your income depends on whether you become a Slovenian tax resident under the ordinary rules โ take advice before you arrive.
