Overview
Estonia's visa comes as a short-stay type C (up to 90 days) or long-stay type D (up to 365 days). It lets you live in Estonia while working for a foreign employer, your own foreign company, or freelance clients abroad.
It does not by itself lead to permanent residency, but it is fast, transparent and famously low-friction to apply for.
Editor's note โ Estonia's visa is the smoothest paperwork experience on this list โ but the โฌ4,500/month requirement is one of the highest, so it favours well-paid remote employees and founders.
Who is eligible
- Able to work independent of location using telecommunications technology.
- Work for an employer registered abroad, run your own company registered abroad, or freelance for mostly foreign clients.
- Meet the income threshold for the six months preceding the application.
- Health insurance with at least โฌ30,000 coverage valid in the Schengen area.
- A valid travel document and clean background.
Income & financial requirements
Gross, evidenced over the six months before applying.
Short-stay up to 90 days, or long-stay up to one year.
Minimum Schengen-valid medical coverage.
โฌ80 for type C, โฌ100 for type D.
You must show gross monthly income of at least โฌ4,500 averaged over the six months immediately before applying โ among the higher thresholds in Europe โ using payslips, invoices or bank statements.
Income should come predominantly from outside Estonia.
Costs & fees
- State fee of โฌ80 (type C) or โฌ100 (type D).
- Schengen-valid health insurance with โฌ30,000 coverage.
- Generally low ancillary costs โ Estonia's process is largely digital and document-light.
Taxes
Spending 183+ days in Estonia within 12 months can make you an Estonian tax resident. Estonia levies a flat personal income tax (around 22% in 2026).
Short type-C stays rarely trigger tax residency; longer stays may. As always, check the interaction with your home country's rules.
How to apply

Fill in the official digital-nomad visa application and supporting annex.
Book an appointment
Submit in person at an Estonian embassy/consulate or a Visa Application Centre.
Provide documents
Income proof for six months, insurance, accommodation and travel document.

Most decisions are issued within roughly 15โ30 days.
Duration & renewal
The type C visa covers up to 90 days; the type D visa up to 365 days. It can be followed by a short stay, but the nomad visa itself does not create a path to permanent residency.
