Overview
Introduced in 2022, the Type V (Visitor) Digital Nomad Visa is open to remote workers and online entrepreneurs earning income from outside Colombia. It can be granted for up to two years, with the exact validity at the discretion of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
It is open only to nationals of countries whose citizens do not need a visitor visa for Colombia (Resolution 5488 of 2022). The income threshold — three times Colombia's monthly minimum wage (SMMLV), shown for the last three months — is among the lowest of any nomad programme.
Editor's note — The bar is fixed in pesos, so its dollar value moves with the exchange rate: COP 5,252,715 was about US$1,590 at the official rate of 26 September 2026 (COP 3,306.86 per dollar). The 2026 minimum wage is itself provisional — the Council of State suspended the original decree in February and the government re-set the same amount by Decree 159 of 19 February 2026 — so check the figure when you apply.
Who is eligible
- National of a country whose citizens are exempt from the Colombian visitor visa (Resolution 5488 of 2022).
- Working remotely or teleworking, by digital means, exclusively for foreign companies.
- Income of at least three times the Colombian minimum wage (SMMLV) during the last three months, shown in bank statements.
- A letter from the foreign employer describing the remote-work arrangement, and health insurance valid in Colombia.
- No paid activity for any person or company domiciled in Colombia.
Income & financial requirements
Three times the 2026 minimum wage (SMMLV) — about US$1,590 at the official rate of 26 Sep 2026.
Bank statements showing the income for the three months before you apply.
At the discretion of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Must originate outside Colombia.
You must show income of at least COP 5,252,715 a month — three times the 2026 SMMLV of COP 1,750,905 — during the last three months. Make sure each statement clearly shows the foreign-source payments, because the officer reviews the three months you submit.
Evidence comes from bank statements plus an employment letter or proof of self-employment, often notarised and — for non-Spanish documents — translated and apostilled.
Costs & fees
- A study fee of US$56, paid when you submit the application (Resolution 3969 of 26 March 2026).
- An issuance fee of US$138 for visitor visas once the visa is approved. Some nationalities pay less or nothing — Spanish nationals pay neither stage, while Japanese and South Korean nationals pay only the study fee.
- Health insurance for the full stay, plus notarisation, apostilles and certified Spanish translations of foreign documents.
Taxes
Spending 183+ days in Colombia within a 365-day period generally makes you a Colombian tax resident on worldwide income, taxed at progressive rates.
Many nomads stay below the residency threshold or take local advice on the timing and structure of their stay — confirm your position with a Colombian accountant.
How to apply
Prepare documents
Bank statements meeting the monthly threshold, employment/business proof, insurance and a motivation letter.
Notarise & translate
Notarise and apostille foreign documents and have non-Spanish papers officially translated.
Apply online
Submit through Colombia's official MRE visa portal, choosing the Visitor (V) visa for digital nomads, and pay the US$56 study fee.
Receive & register
On approval, pay the issuance fee, then register the visa and obtain your Cédula de Extranjería in Colombia.
Duration & renewal
Granted for up to two years, with the exact period set by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It is a visitor visa and does not by itself create a direct path to permanent residency.
Bringing family
The Foreign Ministry allows beneficiaries of the main visa holder to apply, with proof of the family relationship and their own fees.
